by this point I should know better, but I'm still going into every garbage sci-fi movie there is with an open heart.this one borrows extensively from Sunshines and Event Horizons of the world, and the borrowed parts are the only decent ones.
You know that BANGER of a synopsis that hooked us all The one that went something along the lines of \"a mysterious sphere appears in space broadcasting the word \"god\" in every known language, and a crew goes to investigate\" Literally whatever you are imagining is better than what this ended up being. I wanted existential cosmic dread but what I got was the most paint-by-numbers generic sci-fi movie of all time.
The new sci-fi thriller Deus has arrived, and we have an exclusive clip of the film to premiere. Starring Claudia Black (Farscape, Pitch Black, Stargate SG-1) and David O'Hara (Doomsday, Cowboys and Aliens), the movie follows astronauts sent to investigate when a mysterious dark sphere is discovered orbiting Mars. Waking from an 8-month hibernation aboard their vessel, The Achilles, they discover the sphere is actually a blinding light from which one word is repeatedly transmitted in over four thousand languages: Deus.
Leaving behind the action blockbusters of the summer, September is ushering in a host of science fiction and fantasy movies based on classic genre premises. From escaping artificial intelligence that has turned murderous in Blank and questing to dangerous cities in search of safety in Vesper to visiting monolithic black shapes floating menacingly in the solar system in Deus: The Dark Sphere, September is bringing movies that are sure to appeal to fans of traditional tropes. September also starts to segue into the spooky season, with sci-fi and fantasy stories mixed with horror and thriller stories that are perfect for the cooling weather and the lengthening nights.
Deus: The Dark Sphere promises viewers some good, old-fashioned sci-fi standards. The planet is on its last legs, and it seems as if humanity's hope rests with a spaceship making its way to a mysterious dark sphere that has appeared in orbit around Mars. As the ship approaches, they lose communication with Earth but get a message from the sphere itself: \"Deus.\" Forced to now save themselves before they have any hope of saving humanity, the crew goes up against this unknown, powerful force amid technical malfunctions and epic explosions. Deus: The Dark Sphere offers a plot fairly reminiscent of 2001: A Space Odyssey, though the mysterious object is a sphere instead of a rectangular monolith, and it focuses on Mars rather than a moon of Jupiter, but the similarity to standard sci-fi stock will surely be the movie's draw.
Though there's no trailer available yet for Peacock's Meet Cute, the details of the sci-fi rom-com that have been released ensure that audiences will give it a go. Staring media darlings Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson, the movie deconstructs the \"meet cute\" premise by giving one member of a couple a time machine to repeat that first meeting until it's perfect. When even that isn't enough for Cuoco's character, Sheila, to craft her ideal partner out of Davidson's Gary, she goes further back in time to try to shape Gary into the man she wants him to be. Sometimes sci-fi premises work the best when they're the background to other, more grounded and human stories, and Meet Cute promises to deliver such a blend.
Mike Scott, writing for the New Orleans Times-Picayune, said, \"It's a theme Mary Shelley brought us in Frankenstein, which was first published in 1818...And while Ex Machina replaces the stitches and neck bolts with gears and fiber-optics, it all feels an awful lot like the same story\".[43] Jaime Perales Contreras, writing for Letras Libres, compared Ex Machina as a gothic experience similar to a modern version of Frankenstein, saying \"both the novel Frankenstein and the movie Ex Machina share the history of a fallible god in a continuous battle against his creation\".[44] Ignatiy Vishnevetsky of The A.V. Club criticised the way the science fiction, near the end, veered off course from being a \"film of ideas\" by \"taking an arbitrary left turn into the territory of corny slasher thrillers\": \"While Ex Machina's ending isn't unmotivated [...], it does fracture much of what's special about the movie. Up until the final scenes, Garland creates and sustains a credible atmosphere of unease and scientific speculation, defined by color-coded production design [...] and a tiny, capable cast\".[45] Steve Dalton from The Hollywood Reporter stated, \"The story ends in a muddled rush, leaving many unanswered questions. Like a newly launched high-end smartphone, Ex Machina looks cool and sleek, but ultimately proves flimsy and underpowered. Still, for dystopian future-shock fans who can look beyond its basic design flaws, Garland's feature debut functions just fine as superior pulp sci-fi.\"[46]
